DOWNVIND

Tuesday, 8 May, 16:00-17:30, Green room, Level -1

Distant Offshore Windfarms with No Visual Impact in Deepwaters www.beatricewind.co.uk

The session provided a project progress update to invited delegates. The DOWNVIND 18 member consortium R&D/ Demonstrator project objectives are; “To develop the technologies, techniques & processes to enable cost effective installation & operation of large capacity Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) off shore in deepwater.”

The Demonstrator made substantial progress in summer 2006 with the first of two REpower 5M turbines (WTG A) installed in a novel two stage operation. 1) The substructure was set on the seabed. 2) The complete Tower/WTG was loaded onto a heavy lift vessel, (from the quay where it was pre-assembled) transported off shore and installed on the substructure in one lift. Substructure 2 was set nearby. WTG B will be installed on it summer 07. The 2 WTGs will be field trialled to 2009 to test the technologies and verify the technical/ commercial viability of a full-scale deepwater development. DOWNVInD is coordinated by Talisman Energy (UK) Limited who are main founders with SSE. Support also provided by the EC, DTI and Scottish Executive.

Tuesday, 8 May, 14:00 – 18:00, Yellow Room, Level 1

14:00 – 15:00 - Launch of Ernst & Young’s QI 2007 Country Attractiveness Indices for Onshore and Offshore Wind

15:00 – 16:00 – Italian Onshore Wind: A Guide for Investors

16:00 – 18:00 – Half hour one to one meetings

The Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices have been running since the beginning of 2003 and is widely quoted in industry and the press.  The Q1 2007 indices will be launched at this session and particular insights will be provided on the near and long term offshore and onshore wind sectors.

25 countries are covered in the indices and on Wednesday 9th May, Jonathan Johns was speaking separately in the Global Challenges and Opportunities session at 2.00 pm on the 5 new entrants to the index.

A separate session was held from 3.00 pm - 4.00 pm focusing on the Italian market for onshore wind and providing insights into tax issues affecting inward investment.

Wind Energy Technology Platform

Wednesday, 9 May, 16:00-17:30 Green Room, Level -1

The session provided an overview of the Wind Energy Technology Platform (TPWind) objectives, structure and deliverables to invited delegates.
The TPWind was launched in October 2006 by Andris Piebalgs, Energy Commissioner. The presentations from that event as well as the Vision document, that was launched there, are available for download on the platform website: www.windplatform.eu
An expression of interest will be disseminated soon to implement the Working Groups of the platform.
